Amethyst is purple quartz which gets it name from the Greek word “amethystos” meaning “ not intoxicated”. Perhaps the most unusual magical power ascribed to the amethyst is its ability to prevent drunkenness. Amethyst was believed to inspire courage, calm and contemplation, and if properly carved, prevent fatal poisoning. Egyptians wore amethyst amulets, and if carved with the image of a bear they were considered especially powerful. Amethyst has often been associated with wisdom, power, grace, and symbolizes sincerity and sacred love. The gem of royalty and high clergy

The legend of the origin of amethyst comes from Greek myths. Dionysius, the god of intoxication, was angered one day by an insult from a mere mortal and swore revenge on the next mortal that crossed his path, creating fierce tigers to carry out his wish. Along came unsuspecting Amethyst, a beautiful young maiden on her way to pay tribute to the goddess Diana. Diana turned Amethyst into a statue of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the brutal claws. Dionysius wept tears of wine in remorse for his action at the sight of the beautiful statue. The god's tears stained the quartz purple, creating the gem we know today.

The Bible tells us of a jeweled breastplate worn by Aaron, the high priest of the Hebrews. It contained twelve precious stones. The amethyst was the third stone in the third row. In the New Testament, these stones became the foundation of the New Jerusalem as described in Revelation. Each gemstone was identified with a prophet.

The most precious form of quartz, amethyst receives its color from iron and manganese. Darker hues of amethyst are rarely enhanced to perfect their color, although some varieties do respond well to heat enhancement. Brownish varieties are commonly heated to turn them into the bright yellow or orange colors known as citrine. This enhancement method is permanent and will last for the life of the gemstone.
